El Nido Trekking & Hiking Guide 2026: Best Trails, Taraw Cliff & Hidden Peaks

El Nido Trekking & Hiking Guide 2026: Best Trails, Taraw Cliff & Hidden Peaks

While most visitors come to El Nido for the sea, the land offers equally rewarding adventures. The limestone karst formations that look spectacular from the water are even more dramatic from above — and a handful of trails give you access to views that most tourists never see. This 2026 guide covers every hikeable trail in and around El Nido town, from the iconic Taraw Cliff sunrise to lesser-known jungle waterfall routes.

Taraw Cliff: El Nido’s Signature Hike

Overview

Taraw Cliff rises 270m directly behind El Nido town — the dramatic limestone pinnacle that defines the town’s skyline. Climbing it for sunrise is one of the Philippines’ great travel experiences: you watch the sun emerge over the Bacuit Archipelago with the entire island chain spread below you.

Detail Info
Distance ~2 km return
Elevation gain 270m
Duration 1.5–2.5 hrs return (depending on fitness)
Difficulty Moderate–Hard (requires scrambling, some exposed sections)
Guide required Yes — mandatory; hire at the El Nido Tourism Office
Guide fee ₱500–₱700 per group
Best departure time 4:30–5:00 AM to reach summit for sunrise
Season November–May (dry season); avoid after rain — rock becomes dangerously slippery

The Route

The trail starts at the base of Taraw behind the town’s main street — guides meet at a fixed point near the basketball court. The first 30 minutes is steep jungle trail; the upper section involves genuine rock scrambling on exposed limestone with fixed ropes at key points. Hands and feet are both required. Footwear with grip is essential — trail runners or trekking shoes. Flip flops are dangerous and guides will refuse to take you in them.

At the Summit

The summit is a narrow ridge with a small flat area and 360-degree views — Bacuit Bay to the west, the Palawan jungle stretching east, and the limestone karst archipelago in every direction. On clear mornings, visibility extends to the outer islands 30+ km away. Bring warm layers — the ridge is exposed and significantly cooler than town, especially pre-dawn.

Makinit Hot Springs Trail

A 45-minute tricycle ride north of El Nido town, the Makinit Hot Springs are among the few saltwater hot springs in the Philippines. The trail from the road to the springs is an easy 20-minute walk through coastal forest. The springs themselves emerge at 40–42°C directly at the tidal zone — the experience of soaking in hot mineral water while waves wash over you at high tide is unique. Entry fee: ₱100. Best visited in the late afternoon.

Nagkalit-kalit Waterfall Trail

Located on the road between El Nido town and Nacpan Beach, the Nagkalit-kalit waterfall is reached via a 30-minute jungle walk from a roadside trailhead (look for the handpainted sign at km 12). The trail crosses several shallow river fords and passes through secondary forest with excellent birdwatching. The waterfall itself drops 15m into a clear swimming pool — refreshing after the hike. Entry: ₱50. No guide required but bring a local map or download the trail on AllTrails.

Lio Beach Hill Walk

An easy 40-minute loop trail from Lio Beach (15km from town) through coastal scrub to a hilltop with bay views. No guide needed; path is marked. Best in the early morning before heat builds. Good option for non-technical hikers or families with older children.

Hiking Safety Tips for El Nido

  • Hydration: Carry 2+ litres per person — heat and humidity accelerate dehydration dramatically. Electrolyte tablets help on longer hikes.
  • Sun protection: Jungle canopy disappears on the upper Taraw section; apply SPF 50 before departure
  • Timing: Start all hikes before 8 AM — by 10 AM heat is intense and afternoon storms can arrive quickly
  • Footwear: Trail runners minimum; hiking sandals acceptable for flat trails but not Taraw
  • Phone signal: Patchy above the Taraw treeline; download offline maps via Maps.me or AllTrails before heading out
  • Weather: Abandon Taraw if rain started within 2 hours — the limestone becomes glass-slick

Combining Hiking with Other Activities

The best El Nido day combines an early Taraw sunrise hike (depart 4:30 AM, back by 8 AM) with an island-hopping tour departure at 8:30 AM. You get the mountain view AND the lagoon experience in a single day — demanding but deeply satisfying. See our island hopping tips for tour logistics, and our packing guide for full gear recommendations. The swimming spots guide covers the Nagkalit-kalit pool and other waterfall swim stops.
