El Nido Waterfalls Guide 2026: Hidden Falls and Jungle Swimming Holes
El Nido’s island-hopping scene gets all the attention, but the Palawan interior hides a network of waterfalls and jungle swimming holes that provide a completely different — and wonderfully refreshing — experience. After days of saltwater snorkelling, swimming in a cool freshwater waterfall pool surrounded by jungle is genuinely restorative. Here’s where to find them in 2026.
Nagkalit-kalit Falls (El Nido’s Most Accessible)
The most commonly visited waterfall near El Nido town. Nagkalit-kalit is a multi-tiered freshwater cascade dropping approximately 15 metres into a swimming pool surrounded by dense jungle. The falls are accessible by motorbike (approximately 20-25 minutes from El Nido town on the road north toward Nacpan) followed by a 20-30 minute jungle trek through secondary forest.
- Getting there: Motorbike north from El Nido town, then trek. A local guide is recommended for first-time visitors — ask at your hotel or the El Nido Tourism Office for guide contacts (200-400 pesos).
- Best time: Morning, before the midday heat. The falls are most powerful during and just after the wet season (June-November) when rainfall is higher. In the dry season, the flow is reduced but the swimming hole is still beautiful and the trek easier.
- What to bring: Water shoes or sandals with straps (the trek involves stream crossings), insect repellent, and a waterproof bag for your phone.
- Entrance fee: Small fee payable to the local barangay (approximately 50-100 pesos) — supports maintenance of the trail.
Taraw Cliff Freshwater Stream
Not a waterfall per se — but the forested base of the Taraw Cliff behind El Nido town is threaded with small freshwater streams that form natural swimming holes during the wet season. A naturalist guide can lead you to these on a customised hike that combines the Taraw Cliff area with freshwater swimming. Ask at the Taraw Cliff trailhead kiosk for guides offering this combined experience. See our Taraw Cliff hiking guide for the main trail details.
Interior Palawan Waterfalls (Motorbike Day Trips)
The Palawan interior north of El Nido town hides several waterfalls rarely visited by tourists. These require a motorbike (1-2 hour ride on rough roads beyond Nacpan), genuine off-road capability, and a local guide who knows the trails. Examples include cascade systems in the Dewil Valley area and along the road toward Sibaltan. These are genuine off-the-beaten-path experiences — see our off-the-beaten-path guide for how to arrange interior exploration with a local guide.
Freshwater on the Islands
Several of the larger islands in the Bacuit Archipelago have small freshwater springs — Bukal Beach (Tour D) is named for its freshwater spring (bukal means spring or fountain in Filipino). These are not waterfalls but provide a rare opportunity to rinse off salt water with fresh water during an island-hopping day. Ask your boat captain which islands have freshwater sources when planning a custom private charter.
Taytay Waterfalls (Day Trip from El Nido)
The Taytay area (2 hours north of El Nido) has several small waterfalls and swimming holes accessible as part of a combined day trip with the historic Taytay Fort. The road passes through Palawan’s stunning interior landscape — lush forest, rice paddies, and dramatic limestone outcrops. See our Taytay day trip guide for the complete route and what to see.
Practical Tips for Waterfall Visits
- Hire a local guide: Trails to inland waterfalls are often unmarked and flood-prone. A local guide (200-400 pesos) makes the difference between a pleasant trek and a confusing bushwhack.
- Wet season = more powerful falls, harder access: After heavy rain, trails are slippery and stream crossings deeper. Dry season has reduced flow but much easier trekking.
- Bring insect repellent: Jungle walks in El Nido mean mosquitoes — apply before entering the forest.
- Water shoes are essential: Stream crossings, mossy rocks, and slippery jungle paths make proper footwear critical. Standard flip-flops are unsafe.
- No reef-safe sunscreen needed: Freshwater swimming holes are not marine ecosystems — your usual sunscreen is fine. Leave the reef-safe formula for ocean activities.
Waterfall days combine beautifully with an afternoon visit to Nacpan Beach (drive north, stop at Nagkalit-kalit, continue to Nacpan, return at sunset). Use our 7-day El Nido itinerary to slot in a waterfall day alongside your island-hopping tours, and check our hotel guide for accommodation with motorbike rental access.
