Month-by-Month Breakdown
January — Peak Season Perfection
The best conditions of the year. Clear skies, calm seas, 9 hours of sunshine daily, and water visibility of 15–25m. The lagoons are at their clearest. The downside: it’s the busiest month — 20–30 boats at the Big Lagoon by 10 AM. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead; depart tours at 7 AM to beat crowds. Temperature: 30°C high, 22°C low.
February — Equally Perfect, Slightly Less Crowded
Conditions match January with marginally lower visitor numbers (Chinese New Year brings a regional surge — check dates). February is the month with the fewest rain days of the year. Underwater visibility peaks. Whale shark sightings increase around the outer islands. Ideal month for diving and photography.
March — Excellent, Getting Warmer
Still peak dry season but temperatures climb toward 34°C by mid-afternoon. Morning tours remain comfortable; midday on the boats gets hot. Crowds begin easing slightly as the European school holidays end. Good value window: conditions nearly identical to January at lower accommodation rates if you visit mid-March onward.
April — Late Dry Season Charm
The wind pattern shifts in April — occasional afternoon sea breezes and some white-cap days on exposed stretches, but the lagoons remain sheltered and tours run daily. Holy Week (Easter) brings a domestic tourism surge — avoid if crowds concern you, or embrace the festive atmosphere if they don’t. Mango season peaks: buy slices from roadside stalls for ₱20.
May — Transitional Month
May is a coin-toss month: the first 2 weeks often retain dry-season character; the second half sees the southwest monsoon establishing. Afternoon thunderstorms become regular. Some tour days are cancelled. Visitor numbers drop sharply after Easter, making early May excellent value — near-peak conditions at shoulder prices. Late May is increasingly unpredictable.
June — Low Season Begins
Rain is now regular (afternoon pattern — mornings often sunny), sea state is moderate. All four tours still operate; lagoons remain sheltered. Visitor numbers at 30–40% of peak. Accommodation prices drop 30–50%. The landscape turns vivid green. A smart month for flexible budget travellers. See our June guide.
July & August — Deep Low Season
The wettest months. Sustained rain, rough seas on exposed coasts, typhoon risk. Tour cancellations 3–6 days per month. But: empty lagoons, rock-bottom prices, green jungle atmosphere, and a rawness to El Nido that no peak-season visitor sees. For the adventurous and flexible only. See our July and August guides.
September — Wet Season Continues
Similar to July/August — still the wet season with 18–22 rain days. September historically has higher typhoon frequency for Palawan than July. Not recommended unless you have maximum flexibility and a very tight budget. The second half of September begins to show slight improvement as the monsoon weakens.
October — The Hidden Gem Transition
Early October: still rainy. Late October (from ~Oct 18): conditions improve dramatically — approaching dry-season character at wet-season prices. The single most underrated value window in El Nido’s calendar. See our October guide for the full breakdown.
November — The Smart Traveller’s Month
Dry season established, visibility climbing toward peak, crowds manageable, prices 15–25% below December peak. The trade wind is light, bioluminescence is active, and the landscape is still green from the rains. El Nido’s best combination of good conditions and value. See our November guide.
December — Peak Season Returns
Near-perfect weather meets Christmas festivity meets peak crowds. Book everything well ahead. The Dec 20–Jan 5 window is the busiest and most expensive period of the year. Early December (1–19) offers excellent conditions at slightly lower prices and crowds. See our December guide.
