El Nido vs Coron vs Port Barton 2026: Which Part of Palawan Is Right for You?

Palawan is one of the world’s great travel destinations — but “Palawan” covers a 450 km island with very different destinations at different points. Most travellers focus on El Nido in the north, Coron (Busuanga) in the far north, or Port Barton in the middle. Each has a distinct character, different strengths, and a different type of traveller it suits best. This guide compares all three to help you choose — or plan an itinerary that combines them.

El Nido: The Island-Hopping Capital

El Nido is Palawan’s most famous destination — and the one with the most dramatic, photogenic scenery. The Bacuit Archipelago’s limestone karsts, turquoise lagoons, and pristine beaches are genuinely world-class. El Nido suits travellers who want:

  • The most iconic Palawan views (Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Nacpan Beach)
  • Diverse island-hopping routes (Tour A, B, C, D — plus custom private charters)
  • A proper beach-town atmosphere with good restaurants, bars, and social scene
  • Snorkelling, sea turtles, and whale sharks (seasonal)
  • Couples and honeymoon experiences

El Nido weaknesses: Gets very crowded December-April; more expensive than alternatives; limited medical facilities; AirSWIFT direct flights are pricey and have limited seats.

Coron (Busuanga): The Wreck Diver’s Paradise

Coron is most famous for its extraordinary WWII Japanese shipwreck diving — over 24 Japanese vessels sunk in September 1944 rest in the waters of Coron Bay, many intact and now teeming with marine life. Beyond diving, Coron has:

  • Kayangan Lake: One of Asia’s cleanest lakes — a stunning freshwater lake inside a limestone rim accessible via a short climb
  • Twin Lagoon: A dramatic tidal lagoon with a saltwater-freshwater thermocline visible to snorkellers
  • Barracuda Lake: A volcanic lake with extreme temperature layers — unique in the world
  • Coron Island town: More developed than Port Barton, with a good range of accommodation and restaurants

Coron suits: Scuba divers (especially those interested in wreck diving), travellers who want iconic lake experiences, those combining with El Nido via the El Nido to Coron boat trip.

Coron weaknesses: Less spectacular beaches than El Nido; the town itself is less charming; growing fast and losing some of its earlier quietness.

Port Barton: The Slow Travel Alternative

Port Barton is what El Nido was 10-15 years ago — a small, quiet fishing village with excellent beaches, good diving, and a genuinely local atmosphere. It has received some tourist development but remains far less crowded than El Nido or Coron. Port Barton suits:

  • Budget travellers — accommodation and food are significantly cheaper than El Nido
  • Slow travellers who want to actually connect with a community rather than pass through
  • Divers who want uncrowded reef diving
  • Island hopping with far smaller groups (often just your private charter)
  • Those who find El Nido too developed or crowded

Port Barton weaknesses: Scenery is not as dramatic as El Nido; getting there requires more effort (4-hour van from Puerto Princesa on a sometimes rough road); limited accommodation options at the higher end; fewer restaurants and activities.

The Recommended Combination: All Three

For a 14-day Palawan itinerary, combining all three is the ideal approach:

  • Days 1-2: Fly to Puerto Princesa. Underground River day trip. Overnight in PPS.
  • Days 3-5: Van to Port Barton (4 hrs). Island hopping, diving, slow beach days.
  • Days 6-10: Van to El Nido (3 hrs from Port Barton). Tours A, B, C, D. Nacpan Beach. Taraw Cliff.
  • Days 11-13: El Nido to Coron 3-day boat trip (November-May only). Arrive Coron.
  • Day 14: Coron to Manila (fly Busuanga USU).

This covers the full spectrum of Palawan’s best experiences. For a 7-day trip focused on one destination, El Nido is the strongest choice for first-time visitors — use our 7-day El Nido itinerary as your guide.
