El Nido in May 2026: Last Month of Dry Season — Is It Worth It?
May is the final month of El Nido’s dry season before the southwest monsoon takes hold in June. It is also one of the least discussed months among travel blogs — overshadowed by the peak December-March window. But for travellers who do their homework, May offers an excellent combination of reliable weather, dramatically reduced crowds, and prices well below the December-April peak. Here is everything you need to know about El Nido in May 2026.
May Weather in El Nido
- Average temperature: 29-33°C — the hottest month of the year
- Rainfall: Low to moderate — typically 5-10 rainy days, with afternoon showers becoming more common toward month end as the monsoon approaches
- Sea conditions: Generally good in early May, becoming slightly more variable in the last week as the monsoon transition begins
- Wind: Calm — the northeast trade winds have eased and the southwest monsoon has not yet established. This is often the flattest-sea period of the year.
- Water temperature: 29-31°C — warmest of the year
Why May Is Excellent for El Nido
- Calm seas: The wind transition in May (between northeast trades and southwest monsoon) often produces the flattest sea conditions of the year. Some of the best island-hopping conditions occur in early-to-mid May.
- Dramatically fewer crowds: The bulk of peak-season visitors have gone home by early May. El Nido in May feels completely different — quieter beaches, empty tour boats, and restaurant seats without waiting.
- Lower prices: Hotels have dropped to shoulder/low-season rates. Expect 25-40% below January-February peak prices.
- All tours running: The full Tour A, B, C, D schedule operates normally through May.
- Excellent snorkelling: Visibility remains good (15-25 metres) and the warm water temperature is comfortable for long snorkel sessions.
Watch Out For in May
- Extreme heat: May is genuinely hot — midday temperatures above 32°C are common. Schedule outdoor activities for early morning (6-10 am) and late afternoon (4-6 pm). Rest during midday.
- Late May weather variability: The last week of May can see the first signs of monsoon influence — occasional heavier showers and more variable sea conditions. Early May (1-20) is more reliably settled.
- School holidays (Philippines): Late April and early May coincide with the Philippine summer school holiday — domestic family travel peaks. El Nido gets busier with Filipino families. By mid-May, most students are back in school and crowds drop again.
Best Activities in El Nido in May
- Island hopping: Flat seas make early May ideal — all four tour routes run in excellent conditions. Book Tour A to start. Private charters are particularly good value in May as you often have the whole bay nearly to yourself.
- Sunrise beach time: Nacpan Beach at 6-7 am in May — calm, golden, and completely empty — is one of El Nido’s most magical experiences.
- Snorkelling at Shimizu Island: May visibility is excellent for the rich coral gardens at Shimizu (Tour A stop). Water temperature is at its warmest.
- El Nido to Coron boat trip: Early-to-mid May is one of the last reliable windows for the 3-day crossing before wet season conditions make it risky. See the full guide: El Nido to Coron.
May Prices
- Hotels: 25-40% below January peak. Mid-range hotels that cost 5,000-8,000 pesos in January often run 3,000-5,000 pesos in May.
- Flights: Cheaper than peak but not as cheap as June-October. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for good fares on AirSWIFT and PPS routes.
- Tours: Same standard pricing year-round, but with far smaller group sizes on shared tours.
