El Nido and Coron are Palawan’s two most famous destinations — and choosing between them is one of the most common dilemmas for Philippines travellers. Both offer extraordinary natural beauty, world-class island hopping, and excellent diving. But they’re quite different experiences. This guide breaks down the comparison so you can choose the right destination — or plan to visit both.

El Nido: What Makes It Special
El Nido’s signature is its limestone karst lagoons — the Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, and Secret Beach are among the most photographed places in the Philippines. The four island-hopping tours cover different parts of the Bacuit Archipelago, and the variety of experiences — lagoons, beaches, snorkeling, cliff jumping — is hard to match anywhere in Southeast Asia.
El Nido also has the better beach scene: Nacpan Beach is one of the Philippines’ finest stretches of sand, and Las Cabanas offers spectacular sunsets. The town has a lively backpacker atmosphere with good restaurants, bars, and cafes.
Coron: What Makes It Special
Coron’s signature is its WWII Japanese shipwrecks — among the best wreck diving in the world. The wrecks are accessible to recreational divers and offer extraordinary underwater photography. Coron also has unique freshwater lakes (Kayangan Lake, Barracuda Lake) that are unlike anything in El Nido, and the island-hopping tours have a different character — more lakes and lagoons, fewer open-ocean beaches.
Coron has a quieter, more local feel than El Nido — less developed for tourism, which some travellers prefer.
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose El Nido if: You want the classic Philippines lagoon experience, outstanding beaches, a lively town scene, and a wide variety of activities
- Choose Coron if: You’re a diver (especially wreck diving), you want a quieter experience, or you’ve already done El Nido
- Do both if: You have 10+ days in Palawan — the two destinations complement each other perfectly
Can You Visit Both?
Yes — and many travellers do. The El Nido to Coron ferry (approximately 8 hours) runs several times per week, making it possible to combine both destinations in one trip. Alternatively, fly into one and out of the other. A typical combined itinerary: 4–5 days El Nido + 3–4 days Coron.
