The municipality covers an area of 923.26 square kilometers and is home to around 51,367 residents. History and Culture

The history of El Nido dates back to at least 2680 BC, with archaeological findings in local caves confirming human habitation during the Late Neolithic Age. The area was historically known as “Bacuit” and was mentioned in Chinese records from as early as 1225, referred to as “Palaoyu” or “Land of Beautiful Harbors.”

In 1954, the name was officially changed from Bacuit to El Nido, Spanish for “the nest,” named after the edible swiftlet nests found in the limestone cliffs—these nests can sell for up to $3,000 per kilogram.
