El Nido During Chinese New Year 2026: What to Expect & How to Plan
Chinese New Year (CNY) falls during one of El Nido’s best travel months — the dry, clear-sky period of late January to mid-February. For 2026, Chinese New Year is on January 29, with festivities extending through the two-week Spring Festival period. If your travel window overlaps with CNY, here is what you need to know.

When Is Chinese New Year 2026?
- CNY Eve: January 28, 2026
- CNY Day 1: January 29, 2026 (Year of the Horse)
- Spring Festival period: January 29 – February 12, 2026
- Lantern Festival (end of celebrations): February 12, 2026
The busiest travel period typically covers the week of CNY Day 1 through Day 7 (Jan 29 – Feb 4), when Chinese and Chinese-Filipino families take their annual holiday.
Does El Nido Celebrate Chinese New Year?
El Nido itself is a small Filipino town without a large Chinese community, so there are no parades, dragon dances, or formal CNY celebrations in the town centre. However, you will notice the influence in several ways:
- More Chinese and Chinese-Filipino visitors: CNY is a major domestic holiday for Filipino-Chinese families, many of whom travel to Palawan during this period
- Puerto Princesa celebrations: The provincial capital (about 5–6 hours south) has a larger Chinese-Filipino community and hosts some CNY events — worth knowing if you pass through
- Hong Kong & Taiwan visitors: International arrivals from Chinese-speaking markets increase noticeably during the CNY Golden Week
- Some restaurants may have special menus: A handful of restaurants in El Nido serve special dishes or set menus during CNY week
How Crowded Is El Nido During CNY?
Expect noticeably busier conditions compared to the weeks immediately before and after:
- Tour boats: Shared island hopping tours fill quickly. The popular stops on Tour A (Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon) can feel crowded between 10am–2pm
- Accommodation: Budget to mid-range options in town book out well in advance. Prices increase 15–30% above the already-elevated January rates
- Restaurants: Wait times at popular spots in the evening. Arrive early (6pm) or book ahead
- Flight availability: Both direct El Nido (Lio Airport) and Puerto Princesa routes book out fast — plan 2–3 months ahead
That said, El Nido is not Boracay — even at CNY it retains a more relaxed pace than the Philippines’ most visited island resorts.
Weather During Chinese New Year 2026
Late January is peak dry season. Expect:
- Temperature: 26–30°C days, 22–24°C nights
- Rain: Very low probability — typically 2–4 rainy days in all of January
- Sea: Calm to slight — ideal for island hopping
- Visibility: Excellent underwater (15–25m)
The weather during CNY 2026 is among the best you will find anywhere in El Nido’s calendar. This is one of the main reasons it is a popular travel period. See our full January in El Nido guide and February in El Nido guide for detailed weather information.
What to Do in El Nido During Chinese New Year
Island Hopping (Book Early)
All four tour routes operate normally during CNY. The key difference: shared group tours fill up faster. Book your tours the moment you arrive — ideally the day before you want to go. Better yet, consider a private tour during this period to avoid the midday crowds at the lagoons.
- Tour A: Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon — most popular, book private if possible during CNY
- Tour B, C, D: Generally less crowded than Tour A even during peak periods
Nacpan & Duli Beach Escape
When the town feels busy, head north. Nacpan Beach (17km, 45 min by motorbike) and Duli Beach (for surfing) are much quieter than the main town even during CNY week. Pack a picnic and spend the day — these beaches are dramatically beautiful and rarely feel overcrowded.
Sunrise at Taraw Cliff
Start your CNY Day at sunrise from Taraw Cliff — the scramble above El Nido town rewards with sweeping views over Bacuit Bay. Start before 5:30am. At this hour even during peak season you share the trail with just a handful of others.
Dining Out During CNY
El Nido’s restaurant scene is fully operational in late January. To avoid wait times during CNY week:
- Arrive early — by 6pm for dinner
- Ask your accommodation to make reservations if possible
- Explore beyond the main drag: some of the best food in El Nido is at smaller, less-discovered spots
- CNY-specific food: some restaurants offer longevity noodles, tikoy (glutinous rice cake), or special reunion-style dishes
Booking Tips for CNY 2026
Accommodation: Book by November 2025 for CNY week. Mid-range hotels and popular guesthouses in El Nido town will be full. If you are flexible, staying in Corong-Corong (2km south) offers quieter surroundings with easy access to town. See our accommodation areas guide.
Flights: AirSWIFT direct flights to Lio Airport (El Nido) book out during CNY 2–3 months ahead. The Puerto Princesa + van/shuttle option is more available but adds a day to your travel. Book by November.
Tours: You cannot pre-book island hopping tours months in advance (most are booked locally upon arrival). Instead: arrive in El Nido at least 1 day before you want to tour, go straight to the Tourism Office or your preferred operator, and book for the next morning.
Prices During Chinese New Year
Expect a 15–30% premium over regular January rates (which are already 20–40% above low season):
- Budget accommodation: ₱1,500–2,500/night (dorm), ₱2,500–4,000/night (private room)
- Mid-range: ₱4,000–9,000/night
- Tours: Prices generally stay fixed; private boats may command a small premium
- Restaurants: Prices are not marked up for CNY — only supply/demand affects availability, not pricing
Is CNY a Good Time to Visit El Nido?
The honest answer: yes, if you plan ahead. The weather is exceptional, the sea is calm, and El Nido has enough to do that even with more visitors it does not feel like a theme park. The main risks are accommodation running out and your preferred island hopping time slot being full — both of which are solvable with early booking.
If you prefer fewer people and are flexible on timing, the weeks immediately after CNY (mid to late February) offer nearly identical weather with noticeably fewer tourists. See our El Nido in February guide for details.
