Planning your trip to El Nido? Before you book, you need to understand the Philippines’ visa and entry rules. The good news: the Philippines is one of the most accessible countries in Asia — most nationalities get visa-free entry for 30 days, with easy extensions available. This guide covers everything you need to know for a smooth arrival.
Do I Need a Visa to Visit El Nido?
El Nido is in the Philippines, so Philippine immigration rules apply. There is no separate visa for El Nido itself.
Visa-Free Entry (30 Days)
Citizens of 157+ countries can enter the Philippines visa-free for 30 days, including all EU nationals, US, UK, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, South Korean, and most Southeast Asian citizens.
Requirements for visa-free entry:
- Valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your intended stay
- Proof of onward/return travel (a booked return or onward flight)
- Sufficient funds for your stay (immigration may ask; ₱1,000/day is the official guideline)
- Completed arrival card (distributed on the plane or available at immigration)
Countries Requiring a Visa in Advance
A smaller number of nationalities must obtain a visa before arrival. This includes citizens of Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Saudi Arabia (tourist visa required), and several others. Check the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs website for the current list, as it is updated periodically.
Extending Your Stay
The standard 30-day visa-free entry can be extended multiple times at any Bureau of Immigration (BI) office in the Philippines. The nearest office to El Nido is in Puerto Princesa.

Practical tip: For a typical 1–2 week El Nido trip, you won’t need an extension. If you’re doing the full Palawan Circuit (14 days), your 30-day visa-free entry is more than sufficient.

Getting to El Nido: Entry Points
International visitors arrive in the Philippines at a major gateway, then connect to El Nido domestically. There are no international flights to Palawan’s airports.

Customs & Arrival
Duty-Free Allowances
- Alcohol: 2 litres
- Tobacco: 400 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250g tobacco
- Cash: Up to PHP 50,000 or USD 10,000 equivalent without declaration; amounts above must be declared
- Goods: Personal effects for own use are generally duty-free
Prohibited Items
- Illegal drugs (severe penalties — including death penalty risk for large amounts)
- Firearms and ammunition without proper permits
- Plants and animals without CITES/BFAR permits
- Pornographic materials
El Nido Eco-Tourism Fee
All visitors to El Nido must pay a local Eco-Tourism Development Fee of ₱200 per person (valid for 10 days). This is separate from any national entry requirements and is collected by the El Nido Tourism Office, usually on arrival or at your first island-hopping tour check-in.
The fee supports environmental conservation efforts in the Bacuit Archipelago. Keep your receipt — you may be asked to show it at tour departure points.
Health Requirements
No vaccinations are currently mandatory for entry to the Philippines from most countries. However, the following are recommended by travel health authorities:
- Hepatitis A and B
- Typhoid (food and water precautions are also important)
- Tetanus/diphtheria
- Rabies (pre-exposure if you plan extended travel or animal contact)
- Dengue vaccine (Dengvaxia, if eligible — consult your doctor)

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is not a legal entry requirement for the Philippines, but it is strongly recommended for El Nido given the remote location and limited medical facilities. Ensure your policy covers:
- Medical evacuation (medevac to Puerto Princesa or Manila can cost USD 5,000–$50,000+)
- Trip cancellation (typhoons are common June–October)
- Adventure activities (island hopping, snorkeling, diving, motorbike riding)
