Month-by-Month Weather Breakdown

January — Peak Season, Perfect Weather

January is one of El Nido’s finest months. The dry season is in full swing — clear skies, calm seas, excellent visibility for snorkeling and diving. It’s also peak tourist season so expect higher prices and more crowded tours. The northeast trade winds (amihan) keep temperatures pleasantly cooler than April–May.

  • Pros: Best weather, calmest seas, all tours operating daily
  • Cons: Most expensive month, advance booking essential, Tour A lagoons can be crowded
  • Tip: Book accommodation and tours at least 4–8 weeks ahead for January travel

February — Best Month Overall

Many experienced El Nido travellers consider February the single best month to visit. Slightly fewer tourists than January, consistently excellent weather, calm seas, and longer daylight hours. Valentine’s Day sees a romantic travel spike — book early if visiting mid-February.

  • Pros: Ideal conditions, slightly fewer tourists than Jan/Mar
  • Cons: Still peak pricing; Valentine’s week very busy

March — Peak Season Finale

March remains excellent for weather but is the last month of true peak season. Late March sees the transition as temperatures begin to rise. Holy Week (Semana Santa, usually March–April) brings Filipino domestic tourists — the archipelago can feel very crowded during this period.

  • Pros: Great weather, good visibility
  • Cons: Hot by late March; Holy Week = massive crowds

April — Hot but Beautiful

April is the hottest month in El Nido — temperatures regularly hit 32–34°C at midday. The trade winds ease off, making the sea glass-calm and ideal for snorkeling and diving. Crowds thin out after Holy Week, prices drop, and tour availability improves. An excellent shoulder season choice for heat-tolerant travellers.

  • Pros: Fewer tourists, lower prices, glass-calm sea, great for diving
  • Cons: Very hot midday; some afternoon haze
  • Tip: Schedule strenuous activities (hiking, Nacpan) for early morning

May — Last Month Before the Rains

May is the final window of reliable good weather. Occasional afternoon showers begin to appear but mornings are still sunny and the sea remains calm. Fewest tourists of any good-weather month — great value for money. Tours operate normally through most of May.

  • Pros: Low crowds, low prices, still good weather
  • Cons: Some afternoon showers possible; second half of May increasingly unpredictable

June–August — Wet Season, Proceed with Caution

El Nido’s wet season runs June–October, with June–August being the most challenging months. The southwest monsoon (habagat) brings strong winds, heavy rain, and rough seas. Many island-hopping tours are cancelled or significantly curtailed. Some outer island stops become inaccessible.

  • Reality check: Tours CAN still operate on calm days — El Nido is not completely shut down. But expect cancellations and reduced options.
  • Advantage: Rock-bottom prices, empty beaches, lush green jungle, dramatic cloudscape photography
  • Who should visit: Flexible travellers, budget travellers, photographers, those who don’t mind gambling on weather
  • Who should avoid: Those with limited time, families with children, first-time visitors

September–October — Transitional, Improving

The rains begin to ease in September and conditions improve through October. October is often a surprisingly good month — fewer tourists than December–March, improving weather, and the start of surfing season at Duli Beach. Some operators call October El Nido’s “secret season.”

  • September: Still unpredictable; some cancellations possible
  • October: Much improved; most tours operating; surf season begins at Duli
  • Advantage: Low prices, very few tourists, sea beginning to calm

November — Start of Dry Season

November marks the return of reliable good weather. The northeast trade winds arrive, cooling things down and calming the sea. It’s the beginning of the best travel window and an excellent month to visit — good conditions without the peak-season crowds or prices of December–March.

  • Pros: Good weather, low-moderate crowds, fair prices
  • Cons: Occasional short rain showers early in the month

December — Perfect Weather Returns

December brings El Nido’s best weather and — by the second half of the month — the year’s biggest crowds. Christmas week (Dec 20–Jan 2) is peak of peak season: extraordinary atmosphere, festive decorations in the town, but very expensive accommodation and fully booked tours. Book 3–6 months ahead if visiting Christmas week.

  • Pros: Perfect weather, festive atmosphere
  • Cons: Most expensive week of the year; everything sold out if you don’t plan ahead
